When it needs to happen
In this part of New Jersey the window runs roughly October 15 to November 15 — late enough that the lawn has stopped needing water, early enough to beat the first hard freeze. A hard freeze generally means a few hours below 28°F, and it does not wait for a convenient date.
If you want a particular day, book by mid-October. The two weeks before the first freeze are the busiest of our year, and they fill from the top down.
Why skipping it gets expensive
Water expands as it freezes. Left sitting in the system over a North Jersey winter, it cracks PVC laterals, splits poly fittings, and destroys valve diaphragms. The backflow preventer is usually the costliest casualty, running several hundred dollars to replace on its own.
None of that shows up in November. It shows up in April, when the system is turned back on and the lawn starts flooding.
What we actually do
- Shut off the water supply to the system and drain what will drain on its own
- Connect a compressor and blow out each zone in turn until only air comes through the heads
- Drain and protect the backflow preventer, the part most likely to crack
- Shut the controller down for the season, or set it to its off position so it doesn't try to run in January
- Flag anything we notice on the way through, so it can be fixed in spring rather than discovered then
What you need to do
Not much. You don't need to be home. We need the gate unlocked and access to the controller and the backflow. If there's a dog in the yard, tell us when you book.
Next spring
A system that was blown out properly comes back up easily. See spring startup for what that visit involves, or the FAQ for the questions we get asked most.
